Software Development Engineer – Open to Graduates and experienced Engineers

Who will I be working with?

Motor Design Limited (MDL) is the developer of Motor-CAD, the most complete and integrated multi-physics electric motor design software. As world leaders, the company provides advanced tools and engineering services for the design of electrical machines and its software is distributed worldwide, with clients including major manufacturing companies within the automotive, aerospace and industrial sectors such as Daimler, BMW, JLR, BAE Systems, Siemens, ABB and GE.

Priding itself on a friendly and supportive environment with a real family-ethos, the company is looking for a Software Development Engineer to join the team and support their ambitious plans.

What will this role of Software Development Engineer entail?

You will join a growing and dynamic team of 8 colleagues within the company’s Software Department, where you’ll be provided with comprehensive training and support as you assist in the development of world-class software. Your duties will include, although not be limited to:

  • Addressing customer requirements and developing new features for Motor-CAD, implementing new algorithms and developing intuitive user interface features
  • Assisting in the release of the software and conducting pre-release software testing
  • Supporting customer requests via email, phone calls and web meetings as required
  • Developing new ideas and technologies for optimising and improving models
  • Assisting with research and consulting projects when required

You will have the opportunity to learn about the creation of the Motor-CAD software, develop skills in programming and gain experience in modelling advanced electric motors, and therefore resulting in the opportunity to participate in designing electric machines across a wide range of market sectors.  

What will I need to be considered for this Software Development Engineer vacancy?

  • A degree in Physics / Engineering / Mathematics, with a minimum grade of 2:1
  • Strong IT skills, including programming using C++, Python or Matlab
  • A technical mindset, with strong analytical skills and practical ability
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Competent in using the Microsoft Office suite of applications

Although not essential, the following would be highly advantageous for this role:

  • Proven experience of designing using electromagnetics, thermal or mechanical modelling
  • Knowledge of electric motors and their applications

What will I receive in return?

As a Software Development Engineer, you will receive a starting salary of £26,000 to £30,000, level dependent on experience and qualifications, in addition to a range of attractive benefits including 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, free refreshments on site, private healthcare and plenty of social events with the team.

Contract: Permanent, full time, 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Flexibility will be required to meet business needs.

Location: Wrexham Technology Park (North Wales). There may be potential for some minimal travel to sites in the Europe, USA and China as you progress within the role.
