Laboratory Manager

Due to business growth, a newly created and highly autonomous leadership role is available for a professional with a wealth of laboratory management experience; to take ownership of the development, buildout and management of a new analytical laboratory that will support the business units on site, by analysing and reporting on the quality of the intermediate and end products.

The Company

Orthios (the group) is an ambitious company, dedicated to the creation of the Eco Park business and employment opportunities. Our head office includes a unique team of experts providing service support to its subsidiary Eco Park and Energy Centre based in Holyhead in Anglesey, specialising in sustainable energy, polymer processing, architecture, design and project delivery.

Our site at Holyhead is unique in the region benefitting from excellent road, rail, and sea transport links which are particularly beneficial for the operation. Orthios intends to develop the site as a green energy centre with the potential for introducing a multi-modal hub to serve both the commercial transport and freight markets.

The Laboratory Manager role

You will be part of an established dynamic and innovative team and will work closely with our Chief Operations Officer. This is a key role within the business, and will involve:

  • Initially assisting with defining the layout of the lab and the equipment to be used
  • Managing and coordinating daily tasks within the laboratory and coordinating routine sample analyses
  • Motivating and training staff
  • Ensuring the development and testing laboratory is adhering to strict ISO 17025 and other laboratory standards
  • Ordering and tracking consumables, including price negotiations
  • Preparing and managing the laboratory budget
  • Undertaking development and validation of analytical methods
  • Producing reports and presentations
  • Implementing and administration of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

As you establish and grow the Laboratory Team, you will foster a culture which leads to a highly motivated and committed workforce, with personal development, effective communication and maintenance of a professional, respectful environment at the core.

What will I need in order to be considered for this Laboratory Manager vacancy?

  • Proven experience as a Laboratory Manager, leading a team
  • Strong background in organic and inorganic analytical chemistry, with knowledge of a wide range of analytical techniques 
  • BSc degree in a chemistry or equivalent, along with BLMA membership or equivalent
  • Ability to manage a fast-paced industrial laboratory
  • Experience of troubleshooting analytical instruments and problem solving
  • An understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice and wider regulatory compliance
  • Excellent communication, influencing and communication skills
  • IT savvy with good working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Although not essential, experience within the petrochemical industry is highly desired.

The Package

As the Laboratory Manager you will work from our site in Holyhead and will be employed on a permanent contract with full time hours. You will receive a salary in the region of £55,000 with the level dependent on experience and qualifications, and there is excellent scope for further career development and progression, with attractive benefits on offer that include:
